Rainbows were
common sights at sea where the visibility was
sometimes unlimited. Here is a photo by Bill Cook
of a rainbow midway across the Atlantic on the
way to the Med in 1964.

The Cole is a
modern day destroyer - an example of how the Navy
has changed. Thought to be invincible, on October
12, 2000, she was attacked by terrorists as she
was about to begin refueling operations in Yemen.
She is now in Pascagoula, Mississippi Shipyard to
be repaired and upgraded for duty. It's the cry
of every sailor - "Remember the USS
Cole." Please click on the photo above for
an enlarged view of the Cole being towed out of
Yemen harbor during November 2000.

Another photo
from Kingsley Bennett. Here we see molten bronze
being poured into a mold in the foundry aboard
the Tidewater in 1957. Kingsley and his fellow
molders were experts in the trade. Click on the

A 1958 meeting of
the tenders. This photo shows the USS Cascade and
the USS Tidewater changing places for AD16's tour
of duty in the Med. The photo was taken by
Kingsley Bennett in that favorite port of Palma
de Mallorca, Spain. |

![The Tidewater Mess](graphics/lil_meatballs.jpg)
Meal times on the
Tidewater were special for her crew. Cooking for
over 500 sailors was no easy task, but we had the
best cooks, the best food and it was as close to
home cooking as a mess deck could possibly be.
Click on this picture sent to us by Kingsley
Bennett, a crew member in the foundry back in the
late Fifties, to get a better view of our cooks
conjuring up a great meatball recipe for the
crew's evening meal. |

Refueling at sea
wasn't a dangerous operation, but it could be
tricky. The helmsmen of both ships had to steer a
true course or the hose would snap or get
deep-sixed. Click on the picture for a better
view of this refueling operation in the Atlantic. |

When AD31 pulled
into a port in the Med, the local government
would usually require that we use a pilot to
steer the ship in. Here's a picture of a pilot
boarding in Naples. Click on the picture for a

AD31's job was to serve as a major repair
center for the Atlantic Destroyer Fleet. Here is

several destroyers tied up to the Tidewater.

Tugs are always facinating. Lots of power in
a little water craft. Pulling and pushing the big
ones around. Here's one coming toward us in
Naples Harbor as we are about to push off for the
trip back home to Norfolk. On the way, Palma de
Mallorca. Click on the picture above to see an

2000 Picture One of the
luxuries we had aboard the Tidewater was a Navy
doctor and an operating room. This poor fellow is
being highlined from a ship in our flotilla to us
by means of a cradle which was a basket hanging
from an apparatus of lines and pulleys between
the ships. He's about to have his appendix
removed when he finally winds up on AD31. Click
on the picture for a better view.
