LEE MAYER AND
HIS PLAQUES
by MIKE SHARP, AD31 SECRETARY
ee
Mayer QM3, Tidewater Sailor 1963-64, Founding
Member and Life Member of the Tidewater Association,
was moved by the disaster of 9-11 to do something
patriotic. He has found much satisfaction in creating
the beautiful wooden plaques shown below. Lee started
by giving a set of military branch plaques to his
local Recruiting Office. He continues to support several
organizations by fund raising with the sale of his
plaques and they will soon be available at our website's
SHIP'S STORE.
Lee and his wife, Christine, live in
Rosemont, Illinois, just west of Chicago. His work
shop is in a shed in the back yard. The plaques are
cut out with a scroll saw, using various woods, usually
four at a time. His Tidewater plaque is our favorite
but he has also made POW-MIA plaques, military plaques,
special orders for the ELKS and many others, but his
favorite and most beautiful is the USMC plaque with
the red background.
Mayer also served on the USS Cook APD-130,
USS Talladega APA-208, and the USS Sierra AD-18. He
worked many years as a policeman in Rosemont, and
when they were merged with the Fire Dept, he took
Fire Dept. training and served many years in the combined
position, retiring in 1995.
Lee, THANK YOU for your service
to your community and this Nation.
